Who are we?
We are the Systems Immunology Group, a team of researchers from the University of Southampton who specialise in exploring immune regulation in the skin.
Our group is comprised of scientists with a wide range of expertise, including clinical researchers, biologists, bioinformaticians and mathematicians. This allows us to take a unqiue interdisciplinary approach to exploring the skin’s immune functions in health and disease.
Congratulations to Dr Michaela Reichmann, who has recently published her novel research into tuberculosis! She was able to analyse clinical biopsies and 3D cell culture systems using complex sequencing and bioinformatic pipelines to investigate the changes occuring in TB infected cells. These findings give new and exciting insights into how lung tissue is damaged by TB and what we can do to protect it.
You can read about Michaela’s research in the news article below:

The games and videos from our competition finalists have now been added to the website! You can find them under Defend the Skin Competition > Defend the Skin Games.
You can also find the tour of the Systems Immunology Group labs on our new ‘Our Labs’ page and an amazing talk from Professor Peter Friedmann about his career in skin immunology research on the Learn About the Skin page
Congratulations to everyone who made it to the Grand Final today! Despite the technical difficulties, we managed to hear from most of the participants and were able to announce the prizes!
We would like to say a huge thank you to all of the participants, along with their parents and teachers who supproted them. We were absolutely amazed with the quality of the games that we received, and it was clear that a lot of thought, research and creativity had gone in to them!
